I think these days of big cars ferrying children from A to B and children thinking it's a long way if they have to walk for all of 10 minutes, it's great that primary schools throughout the country run Walk On Wednesdays when children get a sticker for walking to school and classes compete to see which has the most walkers.

This is emphasised once a year with the annual walk to school week, this week taking place in May. They are focussing on how sociable walking is - meet up with people, time to talk to family and friends.... play games en route (OK so it takes longer, but it's fun, dedicated time between adult and child and we all know how scarce that can be)

Check out the site and speak to your local school / your child's school to see how you can play a part in encouraging children to walk - it's better for everyone!

The following is an extract from their site:

"Whilst health benefits of walking are becoming increasingly well recognised, the vital social aspect of being out and about each day is often underestimated. The walk to school is an excellent time for parents, carers and children to enjoy quality time together, away from the stresses of the traffic jam and the blaring of the radio. And it’s not only adult-child relationships that feel the benefit: pupils get free time to socialise with their friends, while getting to know their own neighbourhood better – and the school walk can be a great time for parents to catch up on playground gossip, making it a friendly time for all!
