As many readers will know, there have been recent changes to the law in the UK re travelling with children. Now, all children under 12 or 135 cm have to travel in an appropriate car booster seat / car seat depending upon their age.
Only in an emergency can children travel with a normal seat belt on and no booster if they are under 12 and under 135cm tall. Children under 3 can only travel without an appropriate car seat if they are in a taxi.
The rules have been brought into place because it has been found that under 12, a child's bones aren't strong enough to withstand the impact of a crash, and under 135cm the seat belt isn't correctly positioned to be safe.
So, remember to get a booster seat even if you haven't had a seat for the child for a number of years - keep them safe by getting the booster.

In some European countries you can get your car fitted with special children's seatbelts which solves the problem.
