This is such a brilliant concept, and it works so well too. Find your local Freecycle group, sign up, and you can give away any unwanted stuff to someone who does want it, and will come and pick it up from you.
Or, if you are after something, read the list daily to see if anyone is offering one in your area, or put a WANTED post to your group to see if anyone has one to give you. I did just that yesterday, I want a tractor tyre, and lo and behold, I'm going to fetch one from a local smallholder tomorrow morning.

Freecycle is great, green but a bit confusing for newbies.

Although, it now looks like freecycle is losing its' way somewhat, getting bogged down in trademarks and litigation instead:
