I've tried this and it seems to work, although my mobile hasn't been stolen yet. Anyway, type in * # 0 6 # on your mobile phone and it'll tell you the serial number.
Write that down and if it ever gets stolen you can call a service provider and have it deactivated. It might not get your sim card back but at least it'll stop anyone profiting from theft.
